Week of March 1 in 2nd grade
March 7, 2010 at 9:11 pm | Posted in Uncategorized | 2 CommentsThis week was super busy for me in 2nd grade! I have had the chance to really being taking in all that I can from the
full time teaching aspect of student-teaching. I have realized that it really is hard to have the students see you as the teacher.
I think transitions at this age are extremely difficult. I also feel like right with things will have the chance to settle down for
the students, my teacher will be taking back over, so yet another transition. I almost feel kind of bad because I know it is not easy
to get used to new things in their classroom. I think that the majority of the kids are doing well with it though. The past two weeks have been really
fun. I really like the full time teaching it is so different! I am also done teaching Science because I taught the whole kit and that was about a month long,
so that will be weird not teaching science, but I am looking forward to begin my unit. Needless to say, every minute has been so much fun, even the not
so wonderful times!

Hey Holly! Transitions are something that my kids stuggled with for a long time. When I took over, I started using a timer. We practiced what to do when we hear the timer at different times of the day. Now, they know what to do. If something is different, for instance, when the timer goes off at the end of science, it means to put your supplies away, I let them know beforehand and they all do well with it for the most part. My biggest struggle is getting their attention for a quick message when they are engaged in their work!

I think Jessica’s suggestions about transitions are helpful. I want to know how you might be re-thinking the importance of transitions and how you plan and teach them in relation to the needs of your students. The particular group of students you work with need a high level of structure. How does this impact how you organize the classroom? How does this impact the rules and routines you put into place?
